Club News:

Greetings Ski Striders and other winter sports enthusiasts,
This will be the only paper newsletter to be sent via US mail for this year. All other correspondences will be via email SKI-O-GRAMs or via our webpage eauclaireskistriders.org.
The Eau Claire Ski Striders are advocates for cross country skiing and other human powered recreation in the Chippewa Valley and surrounding area. Our activities support skier development (the Kickin’ Kids Youth Ski program, adult ski lessons and the Chippewa Valley Nordic Ski Team), facilities improvements (the lights and Chalet at Tower Ridge as well as monetary contributions to other regional ski trails), and continuing education for active skiers (waxing clinics, training tips). A more complete list of our activities/accomplishments can be found on our website.
Why your membership is important: Obviously the modest annual membership fees ($20/ family) help provide needed resources. However, your most important contribution is adding your name to our roster of PAID MEMBERS. The number of PAID MEMBERS is of great importance when we make our case to various government agencies, team sponsors, etc.
Just a few of the benefits of membership:
10% discount an all cross country related gear at Spring Street Sports http://springstreetsports.com.
HUGE club discounts on our annual TOKO order.
Skier development, recreational and social activities.
Permission to ski on the Eau Claire Gold and Country Club trails.
Contributing to the promotion of healthy and happy lifestyles while also developing great, life-long friendships.
Please post this newsletter in some prominent place to remind you not only to send in your dues but also to take part in the club activities listed. Be sure and check the webpage for updates.

Ski Clinic:

Ski Striders,

I want to announce a ski clinic being held Sun. Oct. 18th, 2-4 p.m. at Tower Ridge here in Eau Claire. Dale Niggemann will be holding a clinic for all abilities using the one-and-only true all-terrain ski, the Catski. If you've never tried them before, here's your chance to experience skiing on trails without snow. The clinic focuses on classic technique, but has some new crossover drills and techniques to work on skating too. It's a great way to kick off your early season training, connect with some fellow skiers, and learn some great pointers to get you started off right this season. We'll also be doing some

You don't want to miss this opportunity to also learn some of the latest core conditioning and ski specific strengthening dryland drills we will be doing without the skis too. Please call me at 715-579-0510 or Dale at Planet XC to register. This is your year to make some significant gains in technique and conditioning for the ski season!

New for 2009 Clinics
Learn the Cat 1 and Cat Alternate technique
After 1 year of testing and fine tuning I am ready to teach you a new technique that will improve both your classical as well as your skate technique. We have combined skate technique with classical technique and developed a hybrid of the two. The Cat 1 is a hybrid of V1 and striding, and the Cat Alternate is a hybrid of the V2 alternate and striding. This new technique will add another level to your classical, skate and your double pole technique.

Note: Do not forget your RUNNING SHOES, ski boots and poles so you can learn the latest and greatest drills on core conditioning and strengthening ski specific muscles. (We can supply equipment, but please call to confirm that we have your size. CATSkis will be supplied if you don't have them.)

Please refer to this website for more information: http://www.catskier.com/eventsraceresults.html

Hope to "ski" you there, call me or Planet XC to register if possible, but walk-ups are welcome too!

Thank you!

Coach, Chippewa Valley Nordic

Wax Order:

TOKO has a "Ski Club/Ski Team" discount program on wax and tools. Evidently they are not offering clothing items this year.

The order form is attached as a PDF file.

I will be coordinating our club order again this year and several other members have volunteered to help.

Important notes.

1) In past years things have gone pretty well but this has the potential to become horrendously complicated. ITEMS CANNOT BE RETURNED. Some items may be temporarily out of stock and could arrive later in the season. Any items that are unreasonably delayed (several months?) may have to be cancelled. Undeliverable orders will receive a credit at Spring Street Sports. You are encouraged to “bundle” your orders; i.e. several people get together and submit one order under one name, then distribute the goodies among themselves.

2) This is a ONE SHOT DEAL. We need to turn in ONE order to TOKO via Spring Street Sports (Thanks Joe and Dave !!!) along with ONE Ski Striders check for the entire amount. Eau Claire Ski Striders is tax exempt so there is no sales tax.

3) These are great prices (40 -50 % discount) but most glide wax comes in the Giant Economy Size (167 gram blocks compared with Toko's usual 60 gm consumer packages). Further product information can be found at

http://www.tokous.com/NordicMain.htm

Toko packages their wax in boxes of three blocks so if you are ordering a large quantity of one type of wax, it would be helpful (but not required) if you ordered in multiples of three. For example, three blocks of System Three Yellow instead of two or four.

4) IF YOU ARE INTERESTED YOU SHOULD:

a) Fill out an order form (neatly please). Include any phone numbers and email.

b) Add up the total amount due. Please triple check your figures!!!

c) Bring the order form along with a check for the amount due made out to " Eau Claire Ski Striders " to the Ski Striders Kick ‘n Pick event on Saturday October 24th at Tower Ridge. Look for updates We will be taking wax orders from approx 4-5 PM. I will have additional blank order forms at the meeting. If you cannot make the Oct 24th event you can US mail your order to me at 3606 Pine Place, Eau Claire 54701 or make some other arrangements with me.

LATE ORDERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

I will then take our order to SSS. The stuff should arrive within a few weeks and we will have a special "pick up your stuff " gathering when our order comes in.

Life is too short to ski on slow skis.

Happy waxing,
Michael Howe

Cross-Country Ski Trails Design

Area cross-country skiers have an opportunity to design cross-country ski trails at the new 120 acre Northwest Community Park also known as The Ridges. It is located just west of the Chippewa River off Jeffers Road.

Our primary focus will still be making Tower Ridge a premier cross-country ski area. This project provides another option for Chippewa Valley skiers. In my opinion, this would be an excellent location for approximately 5 kilometers of ski trail. The park is north facing with mature hardwoods- which will keep snow very well. The terrain is moderately to very hilly. Another benefit is that it could be used in the early season when some trails are closed due to hunting.

Mountain bike trails will be added at the same times as ski trails. Future plans include the Eau Claire City Council approved winter sports park with snowmaking capabilities for cross-country, tubing, and snowboarding.

Phil Johnson, Superintendant of Parks, is requesting that Eau Claire Ski Striders or area cross-country skiers be involved in the design and layout of cross-country ski trails. Our first meeting will be on October 13, at 4:00 p.m. at the park. Please e-mail jpedersen0968@chater.net if you can help.

Please consider donating some time this fall so we could possibly have some new trails to ski on this winter.
